David’s Creative Process

The first step is to find the driftwood to work with. Every time I leave home to run an errand or whatever, I am always looking for driftwood in the local creeks and streams.

I will sometimes park my car and look through the wooded areas alongside the road.

After bringing the driftwood home, I pressure wash it and take out any bugs that might be embedded . Once the wood is fully dry, I will sand it and then use an air hose to blow away any excess particles. I then wash it down with alcohol and use my burner torch to bring out the character of the grain.

Once that is done, I will coat the wood with rosin or pollyeurithane. After the coating is fully dry, I will work on what I feel is the most attractive way to show it. That might include combining two pieces or changing the orientation between standing upright or laying on a flat surface.
